In the 1985 state playoffs, Cory Booker, then a high school football star, helped lead his team from Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan to a monumental upset of heavy favorite Hoboken. Old Tappan was expected to lose by three touchdowns at least.
But Booker’s amazing first quarter play helped set the tone and propelled Old Tappan to the huge upset. Booker, lined up left of the quarterback, took two short steps, cut hard toward the middle of the field and hauled in a pass he took roughly 80 yards for the first postseason touchdown in Old Tappan history.
It’s a play teammates still gush about today.
After beating Hoboken, Old Tappan knocked off Wayne Valley to win the first state sectional championship in school history. And Booker was the star.
The following season, he was the New Jersey state player of the year and a top 25 national recruit.
